Barrell Bourbon Batch 015 is a mix of selected nine and a half, 10, and 11 year old straight bourbons from different distilleries and rickhouse locations in Kentucky and Tennessee. Its all been aged in American white oak, and crafted and bottled in Kentucky. The mash bill is corn, rye, and malted barley; though the percentages of each arent disclosed, Maxim cites a low rye mash bill (about 12 percent rye) in this go-round. Its cask strength, but lower proof than some of their earlier bottles: 107.6 proof (53.8 ABV).

Barrell Bourbon Batch 015 Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Forest floor of crushed leaves melds into a flaky, lard-spun pie crust laid over homemade mincemeat. Bacon fat and dark brown sugar toasted nuts come into the forefront, along with licks of slow cooked bone broth woven with tangles of sweet and toasty wood smoke.

Palate: Vast slabs of gingerbread toasted over a cast iron pan until just charred, scattered with oven roasted currants and pools of dark Jamaican Rum cream. Each sip of the 107.6 proof heat is beguiling as it rolls over the tongue.

Finish: Split, buttered and griddled diner-style corn muffins slowly give way to richer notes of creamed corn with an undercurrent of cedar shavings. Fire burnished marshmallow crusts are redolent of Caf du Monde Beignets sifted with powdered sugar.

Distillery Information

Founded in 2014, Barrell Craft Spirits scoops up extra casks of premium Bourbon and Rye and bottles em up at full strength. Each batch is completely different. Sometimes the coolest casks on the market are Tennessee-style Whiskeys, sometimes theyre Kentucky Bourbon. The good stuff could be straight, or it could be a finished wood. The point is that they find the best odd lots and left-overs that would more likely be tossed into a generic blend and sell it to us in all of their glory.
