Barrell Rye is sourced rye and, like Barrells other spirits, will be released periodically in sequentially numbered batches. The companys mantra is to seek out unique spirits and release them at barrel proof, striving to offer no two batches that are alike. This is the first batch of Rye being released by the company, although some single barrel ryes have already been released in the market. Barrell Rye Batch 001 is not labelled straight rye whiskey. While it is actually a blend of straight rye whiskeys, the fact that theyre from multiple states precludes it from being labelled straight. The labelling decision came down to either a blend of straight ryes or rye, and the company chose the latter.
Nose: Cinnamon dusted rye toast with a piercing core of crushed minerals, a touch of the 117.0 proof heat reveals itself without overpowering the nose.
Palate: Roasted peaches baked into an opulent custard tart steaming from the oven followed by spice infused malted chocolate and orange zest.
Finish: Air-dried citrus peels dipped in candy sugar gently fading into a lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon finish.
Founded in 2014, Barrell Craft Spirits scoops up extra casks of premium Bourbon and Rye and bottles em up at full strength. Each batch is completely different. Sometimes the coolest casks on the market are Tennessee-style Whiskeys, sometimes theyre Kentucky Bourbon. The good stuff could be straight, or it could be a finished wood. The point is that they find the best odd lots and left-overs that would more likely be tossed into a generic blend and sell it to us in all of their glory.
