Erstwhile Cuishe Mezcal is crafted in Santiago Matatln, Oaxaca by Juan Hernndez Mndez & Hortensia Hernndez Martnez. This expression uses the cuishe agave from the karwinskii family, a tall plant with slim leaves that takes between 9 and 12 years to mature. These agaves are harder to harvest, as the pias are often difficult to reach. Fermented naturally in open vats and distilled using a copper alembic still, the karwinskii agave family produces a dry, grassy, herbaceous, and spicy spirit. Bottled at 90 proof, this expression is easy-drinking and smooth with a pleasant spicy kick to it.
Nose: Opens with a distinct nuttiness, earthy, and herbal notes.
Palate: Jalapeo pepper and spices, along with fruity banana, melon, and citrus notes.
Finish: Dry, with trace notes of chipotle, cinnamon, and clove.
Meet Silverio Garca Luis and Epifania Gmez Meja, a producer family of Zapotec heritage based in Rancho Blanco Gil, Oaxaca. Counting Silverio and Epifania, there has been at least three generations of mezcaleros in the Garca family. Epifania did not grow up in a mezcal family, but learned the ropes and became a mezcalera of her own right after marrying into the Garca family. She was recently recognized as a Woman in Mezcal in the January 2020 edition of El Mezcal, an online publication by the Mezcal Regulatory Council (also known as the CRM, short for Consejo Regulador del Mezcal).
