        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2008 Romanee-Conti is a seamless, totally symmetrical wine. I am not sure where the RC starts and ends, it is simply an an all-encompassing wine. With time in the glass, hints of menthol and tar emerge, adding complexity to a deep core of fruit that continues to turn darker in the glass. The 2008 is an implosive, inward wine graced with breathtaking elegance and finesse.
        • Burghound: This is the most backward wine in the range at present with extremely reticent aromas of ultra elegant and refined red berry fruit, spice and floral notes plus earth and underbrush hints that complement perfectly the detailed, intense and palate etching middle weight flavors that for all the reserve of the nose, explode into a gorgeously pure and driving finish of truly stunning length that seems to have boundless energy. The underlying sense of proportion and perfect balance very much confers a Zen-like character to the ’08 Romane-Conti. A potentially great vintage for this most storied of wines but plenty of patience will be required.

        Producer Information

Domaine de la Romane-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy’s best-known and most collectible wine producer. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romane, the domaine sells wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Cte d’Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous Romane-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world. The domaine predominately produces Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard. Alongside Romane-Conti are La Tche, Romane-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-Romane; plus chezeaux and Grands chezeaux bottlings. Fruit from Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes is combined in a single Corton Grand Cru red. There are three white (Chardonnay) wines made. Only one of these, the Montrachet is made widely avilable. A Btard-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Hautes Ctes de Nuits are not publically distributed. Of course, La Romane-Conti is the domaine’s most famous asset, and the amount of wine made from less than 2ha (5 acres) of land amounts to just 6000 bottles a year. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the Romane name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760.Today, DRC is owned in part by the de Villaine family and in part by the Leroy family. Aubert de Villaine is the figurehead of the company now although it was famously run by Lalou Bize-Leroy for a time, until a dispute saw her ousted from control.
