Although categorized as a Highland whisky, Ardmore flirts heavily with the South-east peripherals of Speyside, lying boisterously at the foot of the Grampian hills. Big and brash, it is also known for flirting heavily with peat, at least some of the time that is.
Built in 1989 for the purpose of producing single malt for blends, Teachers opted to make peated whisky here. This move alleviated the companys reliance on Islays producers of peated whisky to add smokiness to blends a particularly astute decision, given the growing popularity of Scotch whisky at the time. Today, since the distillery adopted steam during distillation rather than coal fires, two spirit characters are made here, a practice that is becoming increasingly prevalent.
This 2010 vintage is fantastically assertive: rich and nutty, with bags of the Highland character. A real pick-me-up dram; however addition of water reveals layers of complexity, and a softer side that is not immediately apparent.
Nose: Mixed nuts with sweet almonds & gentle vanilla.
Palate: Citrus notes along with pleasant spice & oak.
Finish: Rich & smooth with warming spice and a touch of charred oak.
The Ardmore distillery sits at the highest point of the Northern railway line, 600 feet above sea level. Close to the small village of Kennethmont, the proximity to the railway line allowed founder Adam Teacher to transport materials from Glasgow to this remote corner of Aberdeenshire, helping the distillery flourish.
Almost unchanged from the moment he made his dream a reality, the water is still drawn from the naturally rising springs that sit on the 1,500 foot tall Knockandy Hill.
Those who live on the rugged fringes of the Highlands embrace the freedom of the great outdoors and The Ardmore brings together the power of nature in every drop that travels from our distillery.
