It’s the first full-size barrel of bourbon Balcones have ever produced and the first single barrel bourbon release in the state’s history. It’s also North Central Texas’ first ever artisan bourbon. Moreover, it’s completely delicious and has already picked up a slew of medals including a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition!
Nose: Spicy rye and sugared sweetness give way to pecan, fragrant vanilla and a touch of geranium. A little water (not too much) reveals a fruitiness that was only hinted at before; ripe pear and dried apricot. Anise and clove too, beneath a core of caramel and pepper.
Palate: Big at 64.20% abv, but not at all ‘spirity’. Treacle, oak and cracked pepper. A touch of caff Americano.
Finish: A little tobacco leaf picks up where the coffee left off, with dark caramel, rye, maple syrup, pecan and Toffifee!
Balcones Distilling was the first Texas whisky maker since prohibition. Although it was not the first distillery, Garrison Brothers is slightly older, it was the first to release a whisky. Founded by Chip Tate and Jared Himstedt in 2008, it has grown to become one of the largest craft distilleries in Texas, with an innovative and diverse core range of whiskies.
