Project series was made in celebration of their first opportunity to use malted New York grown grains, which happened in 2012. Lucky for them, their new friends at Valley Malt in Hadley, Massachusetts had built a system large enough to support their malted grain wishes. Project No. 1 was fermented from a mash of 60% corn, 20% red wheat, and 20% malted barley. We distilled it twice, up to about 150 proof, before aging in 53 gallon barrels for 4 years.

Breuckelen Project No.1 Bottled in Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Vanilla, cocoa nibs, dried cherries, slightly petrol-ish like one might find in Sauternes, Jordan almonds, aged leather.

Palate: Notes of dried dark fruit, toast with cinnamon butter, and a surprising viscosity.

Finish: Finishing long and warm with cinnamon and black pepper heat.

Distillery Information

Breuckelen Distilling Co. opened its doors after Brad Estabrooke, a former securities trader at Deutsche Bank, left his job and read an in-flight magazine article about New York amending its laws to accommodate craft distilleries. After biking to 77 19th Street in Brooklyn, he found a space a former boiler room in an industrial neighborhood sandwiched between the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the East River. In September 2010, Brad began distilling Breuckelen 77 Whiskey.
