Currently, Chattanooga Whiskey Company has three labels: 1816 Reserve, Cask, and Single Barrel. The two former are reviewed here. They all use the same grain bill: 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley. They are aged both in new American charred oak barrels, and then bottled based on character, typically predicted by their position in the barrelhouse.
Nose: The aroma is dominated by brown sugar, caramel, milk chocolate, tangerine, and heat.
Palate: Neat, there are notes of cinnamon and toasted marshmallow, with a really deep mouthfeel and significant fire, although not as much as expected given the proof.
Finish: Medium long finish, with high notes that are a ghost of the nose, and sweet corn on the tongue. Its a bit tannic and woody.
The Chattanooga Whiskey Company is a producer of bourbon whiskey and “Tennessee High Malt” bourbon whiskey, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The company was founded by Tim Piersant and Joe Ledbetter. The 1816 brand was launched in April 2012,[1] and the company simultaneously announced its intention to help change local distilling laws. The launch met with some initial criticism, primarily due to where the product was made (contract manufactured at MGP/LDI of Indiana), but Hamilton County laws prohibited the manufacture of “intoxicating liquors” at the time.[4] Local public awareness eventually became a catalyst in galvanizing support to change Prohibition-era distilling laws. In March 2015, the company opened the first legal distillery in Chattanooga since Prohibition. The first experimental whiskey, “Batch 001: Tennessee High Malt”, was released in August 2017.
