Proof: 98 (49% ABV)
Origin: Mexico
Distillery: Silverio Garca Luis & Epifania Gmez Meja
Erstwhile Espadn Mezcal comes from Rancho Blanco Gil. While the founders were scouring the Oaxaca countryside for a flagship Espadn Mezcal, they came upon master mezcalero Silverio Garca Luis. They immediately knew they’d found what they were looking for. Complex, elegant, balanced, as well as versatile and good value, it was the perfect fit for their first shipment from Mexico. Fermented naturally in wooden open-air vats and distilled in copper alembic stills, it’s a treat for any fan of the traditional Mexican spirit.
Nose: Butterscotch, banana, roasted agave, and black tea aromas throughout.
Palate: A pleasant sweetness and creamy flavors support more agave and black tea undertones.
Finish: Lingering, with trace notes of spice and smoke.
Meet Silverio Garca Luis and Epifania Gmez Meja, a producer family of Zapotec heritage based in Rancho Blanco Gil, Oaxaca. Counting Silverio and Epifania, there has been at least three generations of mezcaleros in the Garca family. Epifania did not grow up in a mezcal family, but learned the ropes and became a mezcalera of her own right after marrying into the Garca family. She was recently recognized as a Woman in Mezcal in the January 2020 edition of El Mezcal, an online publication by the Mezcal Regulatory Council (also known as the CRM, short for Consejo Regulador del Mezcal).
