Gin: New York Distilling Chief Gowanus New-Netherland

The Chief Gowanus is made with a base of unaged, double-distilled rye whiskey, which the New York Distilling Company just happened to have lying around, as if they were in the process of making their own aged rye. With a good helping of juniper berries and Cluster hops, the kind which would have been used around the early 1800s, it goes through a third distillation in a traditional pot still and is then aged for three months, creating a smooth, robust genever-style spirit for the new generation.

Released in 2013, this gin was created with the help of historian and all-around spirits guru, David Wondrich. He found a recipe dating back to 1809 which confirmed his suspicions of American colonials using rye to produce Dutch-style gin. The gin is made from New York Distilling Co’s unaged rye whiskey which uses New York state grains. It is distilled a third time in a pot-still after some juniper berries and Cluster hops are added to the still. It is aged for 3 months in oak to round out the spirit.

New York Distilling Chief Gowanus New-Netherland Gin Tasting Notes

Nose: Spicy rye and Cluster hops come through, along with the juniper, but the cask maturation does its job. There are no sharp edges here. Blueberries, Jelly Babies, pepper and anise develop.

Palate: There’s a chalky minerality and slightly herbal graininess, subtle coriander and eucalyptus, reminiscent of oude genever style whilst remaining quite light and nimble.

Finish: An intriguing combination of sweet genever with echoes of a hoppy beer.

Distillery Information

The New York Distilling Company is establishing one of the nation’s premiere craft distilleries. It was founded by Tom Potter, who also co-founded the Brooklyn Brewery, and Allen Katz, Director of the Spirits Education & Mixology for Southern Wine & Spirits of New York. The distillery was opened on the symbolic date of December 5, 2011the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition.
