Old taylor bourbon is named for EH Taylor (distant descendant of Zachary Taylor), who bought a distillery and attempted to modernize the equipment in the hopes of making the best bourbon. (He eventually sold the brand to George Stagg.) It is aged for 6 years in charred oak. The Old Taylor label along with the inventory that went with it was purchased by Buffalo Trace from Beam Global in 2009, so we list Buffalo Trace as the producer, though much of the inventory came from Jim Beam (from Kentucky News).
Nose: Marzipan and Seville orange offer a delightful lightness of touch and teasing complexity.
Palate: Almost a hint of single malt about the lightness of touch to the honey here; the arrival is sweet and busy with just enough oaky depth to add ballast.
Finish: Almost vanishes off the palate though the rye and spice stick around to impress. The curiously thin finish is in telling contrast to the superbly honeyed that simple dances with small grain charm.
Buffalo Trace Distillery is a distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, that is owned by the Sazerac Company. It has historically been known by several names, including the George T. Stagg Distillery and the Old Fire Copper (O.F.C.) Distillery. Its namesake bourbon brand, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey, was introduced in August 1999. The company claims the distillery is the oldest continuously-operating distillery in the United States. The company says the name “Buffalo Trace” refers to an ancient buffalo crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County, Kentucky. The Sazerac Company purchased the distillery in 1992.
