Using the ale as the backbone of the creation, the distillery ran it through their Forsyths 1500L copper pot still twice before aging it for an unmentioned amount of time in a high charred, 53-gallon new American oak barrel. The resulting whiskey, of which you can read official tasting notes on it at the end of this article, is a 90 proof offering with beer-like flavors and aromas.

This malt is a collaboration between Philadelphias finest microbrewery, Yards Brewing Company, and one of Phillys most innovative young distilling companies. This is a young small batch whisky that has been released in small quantities annually in very small bottles for purchasers to be able to enjoy annually while more casks from the vintage continue to mature. There is tremendous potential here as the 2018 release is very drinkable, so if the casks impart more vanilla and spice over time, it should be quite good in just a few more years, and according to the plan of the distillery, it shall be released in small quantities annually so progress of the maturing can be appreciated from one year to the next.

Philadelphia Distilling Tough Broad Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Look for hints of caramel, toffee, and vanilla, warm spices like cinnamon, and a little bit of wood on the nose.

Palate: Take a sip and notice those sweet, round malty flavors, a spiciness up front then wood dryness at the end.

Finish: Long and rich.

Philadelphia Distilling is a microdistillery founded in March 2005 in the Byberry neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is the first craft distillery to open in Pennsylvania since before Prohibition.
