“America’s first cocktail” was created in New Orleans by Thomas H Handy, who chose to use Rye whiskey instead of the Sazerac De Forge Et Fils Cognac that was originally the main ingredient in the Sazerac cocktail. This straight rye from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection takes Handy’s name, and recreates the unfiltered and cask strength nature of the whiskey he would have used a century ago to reimagine the Sazerac and make it a New Orleans classic.

A sublime straight rye whiskey from the 2018 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, this Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye Whiskey (named after the New Orleans bartender who first used rye whiskey in the Sazerac Cocktail) distilled in the spring of 2012 from a mash bill that also included corn and malted barley among the key Minnesota rye. It was matured for over six years in 73 charred American white oak barrels before it was bottled at a cask strength 64.4% ABV. If rye whiskey is your thing, then this is a bottling you’ll absolutely love.
Nose: Powerful, lush, and boldly spicy.
Palate: Flavors of toffee, fig cake, and candied fruit, followed by mint, cinnamon and clove.
Finish: The finish ultimately reveals subtle notes of allspice, coconut and nutmeg. Long and warm.
Buffalo Trace Distillery is a distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, that is owned by the Sazerac Company. It has historically been known by several names, including the George T. Stagg Distillery and the Old Fire Copper (O.F.C.) Distillery. Its namesake bourbon brand, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey, was introduced in August 1999. The company claims the distillery is the oldest continuously-operating distillery in the United States. The company says the name “Buffalo Trace” refers to an ancient buffalo crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County, Kentucky. The Sazerac Company purchased the distillery in 1992.
