From Barcelona-based producer with more than 150 years experience of making wine, comes this excellent pink Cava, or rosado, as they say in Spain. It’s made from 100% Pinot Noir and received a commendation at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) in 2020. Well done!

The winemaking tradition in the Domnech family dates back to 1865, reaching its peak at the beginning of the 20th century. Their efforts to replant the vineyards after the phylloxera plague was recognized even by king Alfonso XIII. Vallformosa is one of those big firms which are capable of working with quality as their main objective. Located near the Romanesque chapel of Santa Mara de Vallformosa, in the township of Vilob del Peneds, it has its headquarters at La Sala, an estate that has been documented since the 10th century. There the 15th century Vallformosa farmhouse, the private residence of the Domnech family, owners of the firm, was built. Besides La Sala, Vallformosa has eight more estates spread throughout the area of the DO Peneds. This allows the firm to grow the vine varieties most suitable for each type of terrain and micro-climate in order to obtain the best fruit. The 397 hectares of their own vineyards only represent, however, a third of the grapes needed for the six million bottles of wine and cava they produce a year. The rest is purchased from around one hundred suppliers. Today, they work with a wide range of varieties: Muscat of Frontignan and Alexandria, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Macabeo, Xarello, Parellada, Garnacha Blanca and Tinta, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cariena and Sumoll. Vallformosa Estate offers a very nice tour . From the moment the guests arrive, they can walk through the gardens or observe vinification and ageing processes. The facilities combine tradition and modernity. The end of the visit includes the tasting of some of the firm’s products. In recent years the winery launched an ambitious project called Winery Convention Centre, a space devoted to the celebration of events, meetings and functions of any kind. However, the majority of activities revolves around winemaking. Thus, the winery offer tastings led by its resident oenologists, workshops and conferences about gastronomy and wine, and the above-mentioned guided tours.
